The idea for Stone Age Alaska
began a few years ago by Jim Halloran while sweating in his sauna. Being a
professional geologist, he has been collecting rocks all his life. The
really great rocks would kept in his house; while the just OK rocks would
wind up in the rock garden. There was little use for the rocks after
collecting them, other than maybe some scientific interest.

So Jim got a rock saw and a
diamond drill and started making useful items with the rocks. Now he makes
bookends, card/letter holders, and electric lamps, all out of stones which
he markets through his company Stone Age Alaska. All the stones he uses are
attractive Alaskan rocks. What could be more Alaskan than the things that
have been here the longest – the rocks?
Many of the lampshades are made
by Micki, an artist and psychotherapist. Micki makes paper from Alaskan
birch and other handcrafted papers. We also make shades with Alaskan plant
leaves from aspen, birch, devil's club, fireweed to name a few. Not all the
shades are made by Micki, some are handmade but are purchased and machine
made.
